In West Bengal, 1 heritage tree was documented as part of The Big Tree Quest. It is one of the largest banyan trees in the world, known for its massive spread and scale.
Species: Ficus benghalensis (Banyan)
Estimated age: ~250–270 years
The Great Banyan is located within the botanic garden in Shibpur and is recognized as the world’s widest tree, spreading across approximately 4.67 acres. It has over 3,000 aerial roots that have grown into supporting trunks, forming a structure that resembles a forest rather than a single tree. The canopy extends continuously across this area, making it one of the most expansive trees documented.
The original main trunk was removed in 1925 after damage from earlier cyclones led to a fungal infection. The tree continues to survive through its network of prop roots, which now function as independent trunks. It is identified as a natural wonder and an environmental heritage site.
