In Chandigarh, we documented 1 heritage tree as part of The Big Tree Quest. It stands along Sukhna Lake and is part of the everyday movement around the space. Chandigarh’s green cover is largely planned, which makes older trees like this more noticeable.
Species: Ficus religiosa (Peepal)
Estimated age: ~150 years
The peepal tree stands along the edge of Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh. It is positioned close to the walking path that runs beside the water, making it visible from the main promenade. The tree has a straight trunk and a spreading canopy, providing shade over a small section of the pathway. The tree sits slightly above the waterline, with the open lake on one side and the pedestrian path on the other, making it a visible point along the stretch.
It is identified locally as a heritage tree and is associated with accounts that it was retained during the construction of Sukhna Lake in 1958. The area around the tree remains active, especially in the mornings, with people walking, jogging, and using the lakefront space for regular exercise.
